The Language of Your Dreams

It’s believed you can be considered fluent in a tongue once you dream in that language. That it becomes so much a part of you that it finds its way into your subconscious.

Trust me, I’m not fluent in either Indonesian or Korean. (Although sometimes I still mix my Korean for Indonesian, which is comical when I’m repeating an Indonesian word repeatedly to the Korean shopkeeper whose looking at me like I’m some crazy waygook)

You see, last night I dreamed ‘writing’ (as opposed to English). I’ve been so engrossed in my book these last few weeks that I dream I’m editing. I dream I’m character building. I dream I’m solving plot issues.

When I woke up this morning, I was murmuring portions of my story aloud and trying to figure out how to make them sound better. So apparently, I dream in writing. A little freaky.

Has this ever happened to you? Care to spill the language of your dreams?

When I was in Denmark once I woke up screaming - must have been having a nightmare but I couldn't remember. So my language must me fear.

I have always wanted to do this (and I feel like should be able to because I often fall asleep thinking about my WIP), but it's only happened a few times. Or maybe just once. That is wonderful that you're dreaming "writing" -- it shows that your story is truly living inside your head! Cool! I am jealous :)

I often dream about taekwondo, so I guess my language is "dojang." I'm usually either fighting an attacker (or failing to do so) or running late to or missing class in my dreams. I think there's a lot of analyzing you could do about that! Many times, I'm also using Korean terminology. It's very weird.

Oh I definitely dream writing and editing. It can be terrible at times but also extremely helpful when a piece of my writing has had be stumped for quite sometime. It's a relief when I wake up spilling the words on paper I've been waiting weeks for!

I've not dreamed writing and editing before. That I can remember. Of course, if we wake up with solutions to WIP problems, we may have done just that even if we don't remember that dream. I would love to have and remember this kind of dream. You are fluent in writing! :)

That's really interesting. One time I dreamt in Twitter format - everything in the dream was a tweet. It was really disturbing. Needless to say, I cut WAY down on my Twitter use after that...

That's really interesting how you were saying things aloud. I have had dreams about writing a lot too. However, my last dream was about a bear (I dream about them ALL THE TIME) who's fur was on fire. I ran up to it (yeahrightsure) and proceeded to put the fire out with my manuscript. I dunno ...

I've had dreams in Microsoft Word format. I see a blank page filling up with typed words.

There's a blog award waiting for you on my blog. :)

I dream stories every now and then. They're sometimes strange, disturbing and rarely as good when I wake. LOL. I dreamed in French after three days in France and I can tell you, I never was, nor will I ever be fluent in French. I was simply immersed in it. In both situations, I do better asleep than when I'm awake which results in frustration of the purest kind. ARGH!
